Norwegian Epic was the first ship to include The Haven when it was built, and it's now more luxurious than ever. Extensive renovations were completed during the recent refurbishment, including redesigned suites and experiences. If it's exclusivity you're after, Norwegian Epic has it all. There are a few areas of the ship where service could improve and is inconsistent with what you’d expect with NCL. Mainly this was found among some of the bartenders throughout the ship who looked like they were just overworked and tired. Based on a pandemic cruise early in 2022, the employee morale just wasn’t what I’ve experienced on other cruises, but with staff shortages and a challenging work environment, it’s not at all surprising.

Having dined at most of the restaurants onboard, I can say that the quality of the food and the menu choices exceeded my expectations. The tastefully prepared dishes took the food on Norwegian Epic to a new level. Other specialty restaurants include Cagney’s, La Cucina, Le Bistro, Moderno Churrascaria, Teppanyaki, Yakitori and Sushi. Except for Moderno and Teppanyaki, which currently charge $39, the specialty restaurants are à la carte. The Haven includes a variety of staterooms within the actual keycard-access-only area, along with some staterooms outside of this enclosed compound.

Well-appointed and spacious style awaits you back inside. Kids ages 6 months to 12 years go to the Splash Academy, where they’re further split into four groups by age and given activities suitable for their interests and education level. Teens have their own separate lounge, too, with lots of teen-approved activities, from video games to dodge ball. There are plenty of different watering holes aboard Norwegian Epic. One of the most interesting bars is the Ice Bar, where the entry fee includes two complimentary drinks. Guests don insulated capes before venturing into this cool spot. Events, like martini, wine or whiskey tastings, take place at the bars throughout the ship. A refurbishment in 2020 transformed The Haven into a modern and bright area. The entire area including the proprietary dining rooms and bars received a refresh. With new neutral wall treatments, upholstery and even new dinnerware, The Haven updates resulted in a contemporary, modern and more elegant space.
Cabin Overview
Shaker’s Martini Bar is all for the martinis and Champagne. Svedka and Innsikillin Ice Bar is your place to go for a parka (yes, they really do provide parkas for guests to wear while inside the bar!) and vodka. There’s literally entertainment everywhere, no matter the hour of the day. Right after the ship debuted in the summer of 2010, it hosted Macy’s 34th Annual 4 July Fireworks on NBC. The one-hour telecast event was broadcasted on the ship while the fireworks were launched off a nearby vessel. Features performers culled from “Got Talent” who thrill the audience with their feats of strength and skill.

The port side lift goes to The Haven and requires a keycard. The starboard elevator takes guests to the Deck 18 quiet area sundeck. The Haven, Norwegian’s popular ship-within-a-ship concept, originated on the Epic. This unique concept is devoted to treatments that benefit the mind and body. Start off with a dip in the Thalasso Therapy Pool which will give you a feeling of weightlessness.

Other than serving the purpose of a bar, club, or lounge, Bliss is also used during the day for private events and gatherings. The Norwegian Epic cruise ship by NCL is a unique vessel known for being one of a kind. It was built in 2009 and set sail in 2010, offering a mix of positive and negative experiences for passengers. Despite being the least favorite for some, it is frequently chosen due to its availability and affordability for last-minute vacations.
With only a curtain divider, people often feel that privacy is lacking. The design is very “European” by nature, which is why it’s not well received by the customer base in America. While the design of the bathroom is polarizing when it comes to opinions, the overall room design is quite good, albeit funky with rounded elements throughout.
Recently updated, The Haven’s contemporary look is fresh and soothing. Curvaceous staterooms are the norm for the inside and balcony categories. Taken down to the steel, The Haven transformed into a light, contemporary space that exudes luxury throughout.
Heated loungers, a variety of different plunge pools, and a limited number of guests make this an ideal area for relaxation and renewal. Passes can also be purchased for a daily visit or for the entire cruise. Late in the evening, the venue holds themed parties and dancing. It is the only bar open to all guests that serves the Sail and Sustain cocktail, a special concoction created to use some of the usually discarded parts of food on the ship. The main Epic Theater provides more seating for larger production and music shows. Burn The Floor, Priscilla Queen of the Desert, comedy, and musical acts take place nightly in this venue.
For more elegant dining, Le Bistro focuses on French cuisine, while La Cucina serves Italian food. Cagney’s, the steak house, needs no explanation and Wasabi serves sushi and yakitori. The specialty restaurants are à la carte, except for Moderno and Teppanyaki, which charge a fixed price. The cabins on the Norwegian Epic are where most passengers have a strong opinion. The layout is unusual by cruise ship standards with a split bathroom (the toilet is separate from the shower) and where the sink is in the room.
The choice to cater to passengers who traveled alone or with friends not wanting to share a cabin was a huge hit for NCL. They’ve become so popular that all future ships built for Norwegian Cruise Line have included solo cabins. The ship offers two separate main pools (with four hot tubs), a kiddy pool area and a pool for suite guests.
These Family Mini-Suites with a Balcony are perfect if you want to bring the kids. With room for up to four they feature two lower beds that convert into a queen-size bed, an upper bed and a sofa bed. In addition to the sitting area, luxury bath with shower or tub and your own private balcony, where the whole family can hang out and enjoy the view. Spa cabins include admission to Mandara spa and use of the thermal suite area.
Spiegel Tent started life as the area for Cirque Dreams® and Dinner Show. During COVID, Garden Cafe is a full-service buffet where guests choose from the offerings and staff plate the selected items. Norwegian Epic provides plenty of dining options onboard ranging from quick snacks to multi-course meals.
I believe this is temporary due to all of the supply chain issues. After a planned Transatlantic in December 2022 on the Epic, I’ll confirm if the dining has improved. In addition to the outdoor activities, there’s an indoor bowling alley, Ice bar, video games, library, casino, theater, nightclub, shopping, and more.
